Las Baulas National Marine Park Guide
Witness the Majestic Sea Turtle Nesting: Las Baulas National Marine Park Guide
Las Baulas National Marine Park is a protected area on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, renowned as one of the most important nesting sites for the leatherback sea turtle, the largest sea turtle in the world. This park offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness the incredible natural phenomenon of these gentle giants coming ashore to lay their eggs. Beyond the turtles, the park encompasses diverse ecosystems including beaches, mangroves, and estuaries, providing habitat for a variety of wildlife. The park was established in 1991 to protect the dwindling leatherback population. Leatherbacks have roamed the oceans for over 100 million years, but their numbers have drastically declined due to habitat loss, poaching, and entanglement in fishing gear. The park's boundaries extend both on land and into the ocean, safeguarding critical nesting beaches and foraging areas. Conservation efforts within the park include beach patrols, nest relocation, and community education programs. Visitors can participate in guided nighttime tours to observe the leatherback nesting process (primarily between October and March). These tours are conducted by trained guides who ensure minimal disturbance to the turtles. During the day, explore the park's trails, kayak through the mangroves, or relax on the beautiful beaches. Remember to respect the environment and follow the guidelines provided by park authorities to help protect these magnificent creatures and their habitat. While in the area, be sure to sample some fresh seafood at local restaurants, a staple of the coastal cuisine.
Transportation
The park is accessible by car from Tamarindo. You can rent a car or hire a taxi. Public buses also run from Tamarindo to nearby towns like Huacas, from where you can take a taxi to the park entrance. Be aware that some roads may be unpaved, especially during the rainy season, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended.
